THE FUNNY LITTLE SAPLING

written by Mike Eckart and Christopher S. Torres

There once was a funny little sapling

who lived among the trees.

A cute, little, funny, happy sapling

As there ever can possibly be

In the woods were other little saplings

That were growing beneath the trees.

That were waving and swaying and playing all day

By their great, big, mother oak trees.

Well, they looked at the funny little Sapling and said,

“Whatever will this funny sapling be?

With his scrawny little branches and his spinney little leaves,

He looks as brittle as can be.”

Now the funny little Sapling frowned,

And said “Why be so mean to me?

We all have different names and we play the same games,

And were many different shades of green”

“You’re different!” snapped a serious sapling,

“You will not be a very strong tree

My lumber will be fine furniture you see

In the palace of a King I will be.”

Another sapling boast,

“I shall be on the coast,

My planks cut for the hull of a yacht

Very many trips in a very fancy ship

Which I am sure this is something you’re not.”

Well, this went on and on

From dusk till dawn.

And then, the wind began to blow

The funny little Sapling wasn’t happy any more

He was feeling kind of low

The other saplings’ leaves had begun to fall

Their green leaves turned to brown, they had lost them all

It was getting very cold, and they didn’t even speak

They had nothing else to say, they had all fallen asleep

The funny Sapling wondered, “Why are my leaves still green?”

He stood straight and tall, “What could this all mean?

“What will I be, my skinny branches and me?

I know I’m not a bush. I’m some kind of tree.”

Just then a reindeer passing by, looking toward the sky,

Said, “Winter has arrived, to the north I shall fly.”

He looked at the little tree and said, “Our season’s almost here!

I’m sure it’s going to be another wonderful year!”

The little tree said, “What? What do you mean? ‘Our season’s almost here!’

You know what I am? Is that what I hear?

The reindeer laughed and said, “You’re a very funny tree!

I’ll tell you what you are and what you will be.”

“There is only one tree that is not sleeping after fall;

It’s a beautiful tree and the happiest of all.

And I know you quite well, as anyone else can see

You are something very special,

You’re a Christmas tree!”

Well, that made that little tree sooo…. happy

That he had to shout out loud

“I’m a Merry Christmas Tree

And I’m very, very proud!”
